According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), more than 10% of Vietnam's 76.8 million smartphone users have downloaded Bluezone, a domestically developed mobile app that allows that allows people to contract-trace and identify and alert people who have interacted with COVID-19 patients,

Bluezone relies on Bluetooth signals to identify when two users are near each other, information that can later be used for contact tracing of COVID-19 cases.

The development of Bluezone is overseen by the MIC and the Ministry of Health (MoH) and was launched on April 18. It is available on Apple Store for iOS devices and on Google Play Store for Android users.

The MIC and MoH have a target of 50 million active Bluezone users - the minimum number they believes is needed for the app to have a meaningful impact, but to date, the app has only been downloaded about 8 million times.

With the new Covid-19 outbreak in Da Nang, Vietnamese people and non-Vietnamese living in the country are again acutely aware of the Covid-19 virus and the MIC is urging people to install the app, and is hoping for a sharp increase the number of users.

The MIC and MoH want to emphasize that if more people download Bluezone, it will help authorities to quickly identify people who may have contacted someone who may have Covid-19 and be exposed to the virus, thereby helping prevent larger outbreaks of the disease.
