The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) confirmed at a shareholders meeting last week that it will invest $4.3 billion USD in the Long Thanh International Airport project, in the southern province of Dong Nai.
ACV’s investment will be in the first runway at the new airport, along with airport taxiways and aircraft parking space and maintenance facilities as well as the main terminal for the airport.
Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, approved the first stage of the airport project on November 11th and since that time, a number of national and regional agencies and organizations, along with project planning and construction teams have begun to move forward with airport development plans.
The Long Thanh International Airport will be built in three phases over three decades and is expected to become the country’s largest airport. It’s first stage construction and development is scheduled for 2021 ~ 2025 with a goal of opening the airport at the end of 2025 or in early 2026.
In the first phase of construction, one runway with a length of 4,000m, taxiways and aprons, and a passenger terminal with other auxiliary works sprawling 373,000 sq.m will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year.
The airport’s long-term development plans envision the airport having four runways, four passenger terminals, and the supporting infrastructure to allow the airport to serve 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040.
The new airport will be located in Dong Nai province, approximately 40km east of Ho Chi Minh City and is expected to relieve overloading at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the city, which has been operating far beyond its passenger and cargo capacity for the last five years.
Once fully operational, international flights and cargo will utilize the new Long Thanh airport, while domestic flights and cargo will use Tan Son Nhat airport.
