Vietnamese spend more time online than their Asian counter-parts

Two international digital research firms report that Vietnamese digital citizens are more active online than citizens of most major Asian economies and that the number one factor inhibiting further growth is Vietnam’s limited Internet connectivity and online speeds.

According to Hootsuite, a Canada-based research firm and We Are Social, a British-digital market research company, the average Vietnamese person is spending an average six hours and 47 minutes each day on the Internet, similar to the global average of six hours and 54 minutes.

For the sixth year in a row, the Philippines remains as the top country worldwide in terms of both overall Internet usage and time spent on Social Media. Filipinos spend an average of 10 hours and 56 minutes on the Internet each day, with 4 hours and 15 minutes being on social media sites.

Related to total online time, South Korea was behind Vietnam with an average of five hours and 37 minutes; followed by China, with an average of five hours and 22 minutes. Remarkably, Japan is the country with the least time spent on the Internet with an average of only four hours and 25 minutes.

In the category of “Social Media, Vietnam was again near the top with an average of two hours and 21 minutes; followed by Singaporeans with an average of two hours and 17 minutes; China with an average of two hours and four minutes; South Korean with an average one hour and eight minutes; and again at the bottom, Japan with an average time of only 51 minutes.

On a worldwide basis, the average time spent on social networks worldwide is two hours and 25 minutes.

• Facebook had 68 million users last year - a 4.6% increase
• Vietnam is Facebook’s 7th biggest market worldwide
• Ho Chi Minh City has 11 million Facebook users
• Ho Chi Minh City is one of the top 10 “Facebook” cities worldwide
• 63% of Vietnamese visit social networks to research brands
• 56% of Vietnamese use social media for work purposes
• Vietnam's average mobile Internet connection speed is only 34.51 megabits per second – one of the slowest in Asia

Vietnam has a 120-gigabit Internet cable system that runs above ground through China, and six undersea submarine cable systems. However, frequent undersea cable ruptures are a constant source of frustration for Vietnamese Internet users, and have given the country a reputation for unstable Internet connectivity.

In comparison to Vietnam with a population of 98 million people, nearby Singapore, with a population of 5.7 million people has 17 major undersea cable systems providing Internet connectivity for business and consumer use. Singapore’s Internet speed is estimated to be 10x faster than Vietnam’s.
